A soup supper is a complete invitation

One good pot, substantial bread, and a few clear choices can be enough.

Soup is a generous way to feed a small group because much of the work can happen before anyone arrives. Choose one that has enough substance for the role, such as lentil or bean soup, and plan bread or toast alongside.

Keep the finishing touches simple. Chopped herbs, a suitable plant yogurt, and a crisp topping can sit in separate small bowls with their own utensils. Guests can choose without changing the whole pot.

Check how you will keep the soup safely hot, or cool and reheat it appropriately if making it ahead. A large pot needs a storage plan, not just a space on the stove.

Set out bowls large enough to eat from comfortably and a plate for the bread. The meal feels considered when the practical details work, even if there is only one main dish.
