A little crunch can finish a soft meal

Toast a small amount and add it at the table.

Soup, beans, and mashed vegetables are comfortable foods, but a whole plate of softness can feel monotonous. A small crisp topping creates contrast without requiring another main dish.

Try toasted breadcrumbs from vegan bread, pumpkin seeds, or crisp roasted chickpeas. Make the topping separately and cool it if needed before storing; trapped steam softens crisp food. Keep it out of the main pan until serving.

Season lightly, especially when the dish beneath it is already salty. The topping should add texture, not turn each mouthful into a burst of salt or spice. Tell guests what it contains, particularly when nuts, seeds, or wheat are involved.

There is also a simpler option: a piece of toast served beside the bowl. It does the same useful job without creating a new jar of something you need to remember to use.
